Our September Pro of the Month is Lucas Sartore, an ESF ski instructor based out of Val Thorens, France. Lucas loves sharing his passion for skiing with the younger generations and ripping through the park and powder with his friends on his days off. He splits his year between the snow and surf, spending winters teaching skiing and summers on the water in his hometown of Nice, France.

EN: How did you get into this profession?

L: I’ve been skiing since the youngest age. More of a freeski oriented type of skiing; I used to spend more time in the park than hitting gates. But being passionate about this sport, I decided to take the ski instructor certification in order to teach and share my passion for skiing with others.

EN: What are the aspects of your job that make you feel proud to work in this role, and in this industry?

L: I am very proud to wake up every morning and work in a field I’m passionate about. The French ski instructor certification is a very thorough and complete qualification that has taught me much on a personal level about skiing and the mountains.

EN: Do you have one or two short stories to demonstrate happy or noteworthy moments on the job?

L: I have great memories of skiing as a child, for example I used to carry my dad’s poles and he would carry my skis, or me always wanting to be first behind my instructor. Today, the roles have changed! I’m the one carrying the kids’ skis and I’m the instructor in charge of coming up with rules because all the kids want to ski behind me.

CT 3.0 Skis in Air

FR: Quels skis utilises-tu au travail ?

L: CT 2.0 !

EN: What do you ski on at work?

L: CT 2.0! The perfect skis to ride switch with the ‘piou-pious’* and to hit the park with a freestyle lesson the same day. I am really used to the 102mm waist and for me the CT 2.0 is the perfect ski for an instructor looking for a one-ski-quiver.
*The youngest beginner skiers in the French ski school system.

EN: What do you ski on "at play"?

L: When I’m not working, I ski the CT 3.0, I’m a huge fan of this ski. I find it lightweight, great on piste, perfect for charging straight and fast. It’s a ski that skis great underfoot, phenomenal for switch riding.

Lucas Ski Touring + Flip

EN: What kind of skiing do you do in your free time?

L: In my free time, what I like best is riding with friends. Whether we go touring, spend the day off piste or just ride the park all day long, we motivate and inspire each other. Riding with your friends, that’s skiing! Including a beer for après!

Lucas Wooden Rail + Powder

EN: What do you do for work during the off-season?

L: I spend the summer in Nice, in the South of France, where I was born. I’ve always worked on beaches and watersports centers where people can practice parasailing and water tubing. The seasonal type of life suits me well: I spend five months in the mountains, five months on beaches and the rest of the time I travel. It could be worse!

Lucas Lake Shot

EN: Lastly, what summer sports are you passionate about?

L: In the summer I’m always on the water. I’ve been surfing for over 5 years now and I really enjoy this environment. The ocean is a nice change from the mountains. Thanks to my summer job, I’ve been lucky enough to start flyboarding and to reach a high level in competitions.
