Our April Pro of the Month, and our final of the season, is Mégane Berclaz, a ski patroller based in Faction's home resort of Verbier, Switzerland. Mégane offers an insight into her daily life ensuring the safety of Verbier resort users and her favorite moments on and off the job.

FR: OÙ ÊTES-VOUS BASÉ ?

J'habite à Ravoire, un petit village perché au-dessus de Martigny, dans le Valais suisse. 

EN: WHERE ARE YOU BASED?

I live in Ravoire, a small village located above Martigny in the Valais region of Switzerland.

FR: QUEL EST VOTRE MÉTIER À LA MONTAGNE ET EN QUOI CONSISTE-T-IL ?

Je travaille comme patrouilleuse sur le domaine de Verbier. Mon métier consiste à assurer la sécurité sur les pistes de ski, notamment en effectuant le balisage des pistes, la prévention des avalanches et les premiers secours.

EN: WHAT IS YOUR JOB ON THE MOUNTAIN AND WHAT DOES IT ENTAIL?

I work as a patroller for Verbier ski resort. My job is to ensure the safety of skiers at the resort. My responsibilities include marking the slopes, preventing avalanches, and providing first aid for injured people.

FR: COMMENT AVEZ-VOUS COMMENCÉ À TRAVAILLER DANS CE DOMAINE?

J'ai choisi ce métier car j'ai toujours adoré skier et évoluer en montagne. Ayant grandi dans un environnement entouré de guides et de patrouilleurs, j'ai développé un attrait pour ce domaine d'activité.

EN: HOW DID YOU START WORKING IN THIS FIELD?

I chose this job because I have always loved skiing and being in the mountains. I grew up surrounded by guides and patrollers, which fuelled my interest in pursuing a career as a patroller.

FR: QUELS SONT LES ASPECTS DE VOTRE TRAVAIL QUI VOUS RENDENT FIER DE TRAVAILLER DANS CE RÔLE, ET DANS CETTE INDUSTRIE ?

Pour moi, travailler sur le domaine de Verbier est une chance inestimable. Le domaine est vaste et alpin, le travail est varié et le fait de pouvoir aider les gens est très gratifiant.

EN: WHAT ARE THE ASPECTS OF YOUR JOB THAT MAKE YOU PROUD TO WORK IN THIS ROLE, AND IN THIS INDUSTRY?

For me, working in the Verbier ski area is priceless. The area is vast and the mountains are huge and serious. My job is really interesting as the work is varied, and the fact that I can help people is very rewarding.

FR: COMMENT SE PASSE LE TRAVAIL DE PATROUILLEUR À VERBIER ? Y A-T-IL QUELQUE CHOSE QUI EN FAIT UN ENDROIT PARTICULIÈREMENT INTÉRESSANT OU STIMULANT POUR UN PATROUILLEUR ?

La journée type d'un patrouilleur commence généralement vers 7h30 du matin par une vérification des conditions météorologiques. En fonction de celles-ci, le programme de la journée peut varier. En cas de précipitations ou de vent, nous sommes amenés à effectuer des déclenchements d'avalanches, une tâche que j'apprécie particulièrement. Nous nous déplaçons en équipe sur les différentes arêtes de minage souvent par mauvais temps. Cela demande une bonne connaissance du terrain.

Puis nous poursuivons par l'ouverture des pistes (vérification et installation du balisages, mise en place des protections, etc.). Nous effectuons également des tâches d'entretien, les premiers secours et bien sûr….du ski.

EN: WHAT IS IT LIKE TO WORK AS A PATROLLER IN VERBIER? IS THERE ANYTHING THAT MAKES IT A PARTICULARLY INTERESTING OR CHALLENGING PLACE FOR A PATROLLER?

A typical day begins at around 7:30 a.m. with a weather check. My schedule varies depending on the weather. In the event of precipitation or wind, we often need to secure the ski resort by triggering avalanches using explosive devices. I particularly enjoy this task. We generally move in teams on different ridges from which we bomb the slopes. This requires a good knowledge of the terrain as weather conditions are often poor.  After that we set about opening the slopes. We also perform maintenance tasks & first aid and of course… we ski!

FR: POUVEZ-VOUS NOUS RACONTER UNE OU DEUX ANECDOTES SUR DES MOMENTS AGRÉABLES OU MARQUANTS VÉCUS DANS LE CADRE DE VOTRE TRAVAIL ? BONS OU MAUVAIS.

Durant l'une de mes premières saisons, nous avons reçu un appel d'un speed-flyer qui était enseveli sous une avalanche au Creblet (zone hors-piste ,proche du domaine) Quand nous sommes arrivés sur place, il sortait juste la tête et un bras. La voile du parapente était complètement ensevelie. Nous avons réussi à le dégager, ce qui a été un bon souvenir. Malheureusement, cela ne se termine pas toujours aussi bien.

EN: CAN YOU TELL US ONE OR TWO ANECDOTES ABOUT PLEASANT OR MEMORABLE MOMENTS IN YOUR WORK? GOOD OR BAD.

During one of my first seasons, we received a call from a speed-flyer who was buried under an avalanche at Creblet, which is an off-piste zone close to the pistes. Only his head and arm were sticking out of the snow when we arrived. The wing was completely buried. We managed to get him out of the avalanche unharmed, which was a big relief. Unfortunately, it doesn't always end so well.

FR: PARLEZ-NOUS DE VOTRE ÉQUIPEMENT. QUELS SKIS UTILISEZ-VOUS ? QUE CONTIENT VOTRE SAC À DOS LORSQUE VOUS TRAVAILLEZ ?

Nous sommes équipés d'un sac airbag, d'un DVA, d'une pelle, d'une sonde et chaque patrouilleur dispose de sa propre pharmacie, minerve, cordelette, etc.

En matière de ski, j'aime m'adapter aux conditions du moment. Si je passe la journée sur les pistes, j'utilise des skis typés piste ou les Chapter 2.0 (l’équivalent du Dancer 2 dans notre collection actuelle). Sinon, je skie principalement avec les Agent 3 Verbier, des skis adaptés aux itinéraires, poudreuse et sur la piste.

EN: TELL US ABOUT YOUR EQUIPMENT. WHAT SKIS DO YOU USE? WHAT IS IN YOUR BACKPACK WHEN YOU ARE WORKING?

We are equipped with an airbag, transceiver, shovel, probe and each patroller has their own first aid kit, neck brace, rope, etc. 

When it comes to skiing, I like to adapt my equipment choice according to the conditions. If I'm skiing on piste for the day, then I’lI use piste skis or an old pair of Chapter 2.0s (the equivalent of the Dancer 2 in our current lineup). Otherwise, I mainly ski with the Agent 3 Verbier, which is great for the variety of terrain and conditions we find here in Verbier.

FR: QUEL TYPE DE SKI AIMEZ-VOUS PRATIQUER PENDANT VOTRE TEMPS LIBRE ET POURQUOI ?

J'aime découvrir d'autres stations de ski, notamment pour le ski hors-piste. Je pratique également le ski de randonnée et un peu de monoski.

EN: WHAT KIND OF SKIING DO YOU LIKE TO PRACTISE IN YOUR FREE TIME AND WHY?

I like to discover other ski resorts, especially for off-piste skiing. I also ski tour and do some monoskiing.

FR: QUELLE EST VOTRE DESCENTE / ZONE HORS-PISTE PRÉFÉRÉE À VERBIER ?

Mon secteur préféré est sans conteste le Mont-Gelé, où nous sommes les premiers à arriver au sommet lorsque les conditions sont bonnes. Ce moment est toujours magique, car nous avons le privilège d'être seuls dans ce cadre exceptionnel et de faire du bon ski .

EN: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE OFF-PISTE AREA IN VERBIER?

My favorite area is definitely Mont Gelé, where we are the first people to reach the summit when the conditions are good. That moment is always magical, because we have the privilege of being alone in this exceptional setting and doing some amazing skiing.
